To view or add a comment, sign in Albuterol (Salbutamol) Class: • Short-acting beta-2 adrenergic receptor agonist (SABA) • Bronchodilator Mechanism of Action • Stimulates beta-2 adrenergic receptors in bronchial smooth muscle • Increases cAMP → activates protein kinase A → relaxation of smooth muscle → bronchodilation Uses • Acute relief of bronchospasm in: • Asthma • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) • Exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB) • Hyperkalemia (off-label: shifts potassium into cells temporarily) Routes of Administration • Inhalation (preferred): Metered-dose inhaler (MDI), nebulizer • Oral: Tablets or syrup (less preferred due to systemic effects) • IV: Rarely, in severe status asthmaticus Dosage (Typical) • Inhalation (adults/children ≥4 years): • 90–180 mcg (1–2 puffs) every 4–6 hours as needed • Nebulizer: 2.5 mg every 20 minutes × 3 doses, then 2.5 mg every 2–4 hours as needed Adverse Effects • Tremors (most common) • Tachycardia, palpitations • Nervousness, headache • Hypokalemia (especially with high doses) • Rare: arrhythmias, paradoxical bronchospasm Precautions / Contraindications • Use caution in patients with cardiac disease, arrhythmias, hypertension • Avoid overuse → tolerance and decreased effectiveness • Monitor for hypokalemia in severe asthma exacerbations • SABA = rescue inhaler for acute asthma symptoms • Quick onset (~5 minutes), short duration (~4–6 hours) • Side effects: tremor and tachycardia • Can be used temporarily in hyperkalemia to shift K⁺ into cells • First-line therapy for acute bronchospasm To view or add a comment, sign in I’m Excited to share our new open-access review in Diabetes, Obesity & Metabolism: “Diabetic kidney disease, biomarkers, and finerenone.” Why this matters: Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) affects ~30–40% of people with diabetes and remains the leading cause of kidney failure worldwide, tightly linked to cardiovascular risk
