Mounteney Jephson's escape after his ship, the Advance, was being held on the banks of the Nile at Tunguru where he was accused of attempting to flee the country shortly after leaving Emin Pasha in order to join Sir Henry Morton Stanley and the rear guard at the conclusion of the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition which left them both as fugitives of the ruling Mahdist rebels who had ousted
